Mother’s Day hits different when you’re caring for an aging parent. You remember the woman who packed your lunches, drove you to every practice, and somehow kept the whole household running. Now you’re the one making sure she’s safe and well cared for. If you’re juggling your own family, your career, and the growing needs of your elderly loved one, this Mother’s Day is your reminder: you don’t have to do it alone.

At Benevolent Hearts Home Care, we believe every mom deserves to feel celebrated, whether she’s 45 or 85. Not just on May 10th, but every day. We’ve put together a list of senior-friendly events across Bedford, the Mid-Cities, and the greater DFW area so your family can spend less time planning and more time being together.

Why These Moments Matter More Than You Think

It’s easy to write off a local event as just another outing. But for your elderly loved one, an afternoon at the Arboretum or a train ride through Tarrant County can mean so much more. Research from the CDC links social engagement and time outdoors to better emotional well-being and longer life for aging adults.

For families dealing with memory loss or early-stage dementia, these outings can be surprisingly meaningful. Familiar sensory experiences (the scent of spring flowers, live music, warm sunshine) can spark moments of connection that words alone sometimes can’t.

Making Mother’s Day Meaningful When Memory Fades

Are you wondering how to celebrate Mother’s Day with a parent who’s struggling with memory loss? You’re not alone, and the answer is simpler than you might think: meet her where she is.

Your mom may not remember every detail of an outing the next day. But in the moment, watching grandchildren laugh, feeling your hand on hers, hearing a song from decades ago, she’s fully present. Those moments of joy are real. They matter deeply.

Here are a few ideas our PAC-certified dementia care team recommends, based on the Teepa Snow Positive Approach to Care® methodology we use every day:

If your loved one’s care needs make an outing feel like too much, our trained caregivers can come along to help. Or they can stay home with Mom so you can take a well-deserved break yourself.

Grapevine Vintage Railroad: A Gentle Adventure for the Whole Family

Step onto a century-old rail coach and let the world slow down for a few hours. The Grapevine Vintage Railroad is running Mother’s Day weekend excursions on Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 10. The train travels the scenic Cotton Belt Route from Grapevine’s Historic Main Street to the Fort Worth Stockyards.

This is one of the most senior-friendly outings in the DFW area. The coaches are climate-controlled, concessions are available onboard, and the pace is relaxed. No long walks. No standing in lines. Mom gets a rose and a gift, and your family gets hours of unhurried time together.

For families whose aging parents use wheelchairs or walkers, the railroad offers a comfortable, dignified way to enjoy a special day out.

Scarborough Renaissance Festival: Free Admission for Kids on Mother’s Day

The Scarborough Renaissance Festival in Waxahachie is celebrating its 45th season, and Mother’s Day weekend (May 9 and 10) is “Flights of Fantasy Weekend.” On Sunday, children 12 and under get in free (up to 3 per paid adult), and seniors 65+ receive a discount at the gate.

Twenty-plus stages of live entertainment, artisan shops, and shaded seating areas fill the 25-acre village. There’s plenty for grandma to enjoy, even if she’s not up for a full day of walking. Toddlers, teenagers, parents, grandparents: everyone finds something here.

Fort Worth Zoo: Brunch Among the Animals

The Fort Worth Zoo’s Mother’s Day Brunch sells out every single year. In past years, brunch has been held at The Reserve in the African Savanna, featuring multiple seatings, a giraffe-feeding experience, and an animal meet-and-greet. All proceeds go toward the care of the Zoo’s nearly 7,000 animals, so your family is supporting a great cause while spending the day together.

The covered, open-sided pavilion means you can enjoy the outdoors rain or shine. The Zoo’s 2026 Mother’s Day event page hasn’t been updated yet. We recommend bookmarking it and checking back in mid-April for confirmed times, seatings, and ticket sales. This one goes fast, so don’t wait once details drop.

Dallas Arboretum: Spring Blooms and Time with Mom

The Dallas Arboretum is one of the most beautiful spots in North Texas for Mother’s Day. Sixty-six acres of gardens in full spring bloom, paved pathways throughout, and accessible restrooms make it a solid choice for families with senior loved ones.

Each year, the Arboretum typically hosts a Mother’s Day Market with local artisans alongside a Wolfgang Puck Catering brunch. Check their website for confirmed 2026 details as the date approaches. Even without a ticketed event, the gardens are worth the visit on their own. Bring a picnic blanket and find a spot under the trees in the Magnolia Glade. Studies show that time in nature improves well-being for aging adults, and you’ll see why when you’re there.
