Fall Prevention Specialty Program

Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries for people aged 65 and up. Our caregivers can reduce the incidence of falls by following our individualized care plans addressing each of the common risk factors. Additionally, fall prevention training is provided to each staff member as part of their ongoing education.

The causes of falls are known as risk factors. Although no single risk factor causes all falls, the greater the number of risk factors to which an individual is exposed, the greater the probability of a fall and the more likely the results of the fall will threaten the person’s independence.

Many of these risk factors are preventable. As obvious as it may sound, a lack of knowledge about risk factors and how to prevent them contributes to many falls. Some people believe that falls are a normal part of aging, and as such are not preventable. Lack of knowledge leads to lack of preventive action, resulting in falls.

Our caregivers are extensively trained on the risk factors that result in most falls.

Benevolent Hearts Home Care can reduce the risk factors by providing transportation to eye doctor and optometrist appointments, ensuring lighting is sufficient in the home and glasses are worn.  Our caregivers can assist the client with completing exercises provided by licensed staff to prevent bone loss, improve balance and increase strength.  Caregivers can also provide reminders to clients to ensure medications are taken properly and doctor visits to manage chronic conditions are not missed.  Finally, the caregivers can maintain clear pathways by completing light housekeeping ensuring floors are clean, safe, and free of obstacles.
